The Origin of Pencils

I. Origin of the character "Lead" in Pencil (The Earliest "True Lead Pencil")

As early as Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, people polished pure metallic lead into thin sticks to draw marks on wax tablets and stone slabs, leaving pale gray traces. These were genuine writing tools containing lead, known in English as lead pencil. Later, ancient people discovered that graphite could also leave black marks. Mistaking graphite for lead ore, they named it black lead, and the name "pencil" has been passed down ever since.

Key Point: Modern pencil leads contain zero metallic lead, made from graphite (carbon) and clay only.


II. Birth of the Primitive Graphite Pencil (1564, The Starting Point of Pencils)

In 1564, a strong wind blew down a large tree in Borrowdale, England, exposing a massive deposit of high-purity graphite.

Shepherds were the first to use it: they cut small chunks of graphite to mark individual sheep; Merchants mined graphite in large quantities, sliced it into thin graphite strips for sale, used for marking goods and hand-drawing;

Drawbacks: Graphite is extremely brittle and fragile, leaving black stains all over hands upon touching. People could only wrap graphite strips with cloth or sheepskin for grip; The British royal family monopolized this graphite mine, supplying Europe exclusively for a long time, making it nearly impossible for other countries to obtain graphite.


III. The First Synthetic Pencil Lead (1761, Improved by Kaspar Faber, Germany)

German craftsman Kaspar Faber solved the problems of pure graphite being fragile and staining hands: Grind graphite into fine powder and wash it with water to remove impurities;Mix sulfur, antimony and rosin, heat and fuse the mixture, then compress it into solid strips;Wrap the strips with paper for use, greatly boosting toughness. This was the first mass-produced artificial pencil lead;However, it could only produce leads of single hardness, unable to differentiate shades, softness or hardness.


IV. Birth of Core Modern Pencil Lead Technology (1795, The Conté Process, A Milestone)

During the Napoleonic Wars, Britain and Germany blockaded France and cut off graphite supplies. French engineer Nicolas-Jacques Conté was tasked with developing homemade pencils: Grind low-grade local graphite into powder, blend with clay and water to form paste, extrude into thin leads;Fire and solidify the leads in high-temperature kilns; clay vitrifies to support graphite and prevent breakage;

Key Breakthrough: Adjust clay proportion to control hardnessMore clay = harder lead, lighter writing marks (H hard pencils)

More graphite = softer lead, darker black writing marks (B soft pencils)

This manufacturing process is still in use today; all graphite pencil leads are produced via this method.


V. Launch of the Complete Wooden-cased Pencil (1812, Finalization of Modern Pencils)

American carpenter William Munroe invented a grooving machine and created standard pencils with wooden casings: Cut semi-circular grooves on thin wooden slats, insert fired pencil leads into the grooves;Coat two grooved slats with glue, align and clamp them tightly to sandwich the pencil lead in the middle;Machine uniformly cut the bonded wood into hexagonal or round pencil barrels;Since then, people no longer need to wrap leads with paper or cloth. Clean, durable and easy to sharpen and write with, this is the wooden pencil we used in childhood.


VI. Subsequent Improvements & Introduction to China

19th Century: Pencils were coated with multiple layers of paint, hot-stamped with logos, and fitted with aluminum ferrules and erasers at the end; mechanical pencils and colored pencils emerged one after another;

In 1932, World Pencil Co. (Dahua Pencil Factory), China’s first pencil manufacturing plant, was built in Hong Kong. Pencils officially entered the daily lives of Chinese civilians on a large scale.
