How are the pencils we’ve used since childhood made?

First, let’s correct a common misconception: pencil leads contain no metallic lead; they are fired from a mixture of graphite and clay. The full pencil production consists of two major production lines: lead manufacturing, wooden barrel processing, followed by assembly and painting.


I. Step 1: Production of Black Graphite Leads (HB / 2B / H, etc.)

1. Precise Raw Material Proportioning (Determines Hardness)

Graphite delivers blackness, while clay controls hardness:

H Hard Pencils: High clay content, low graphite content, producing faint light marks (for technical drawing)

B Soft Pencils: High graphite content, low clay content, creating dense dark lines (for sketching & exam 2B pencils)

HB features a balanced ratio of graphite and clay, the most widely used for daily writing

Raw materials are ground into ultra-fine powder, mixed with water to form dough-like paste, then left to stand for 24~48 hours for full homogenization.


2. High-Pressure Extrusion Molding

The paste is fed into an extruder, extruded through tiny round holes into long noodle-shaped soft leads, then automatically cut by machine to standard pencil lengths.


3. Low-Temperature Drying

Dry for over ten hours at 80~160°C to remove most moisture, hardening the soft leads initially and preventing warping.


4. High-Temperature Kiln Firing at 1000°C (The Most Critical Step)

Place leads into refractory containers to isolate oxygen, then fire at thousands of degrees Celsius for several hours: the clay vitrifies and hardens, locking graphite firmly inside; otherwise, leads will shatter at the first stroke.


5. Wax Impregnation for Smooth Writing

Fired leads are porous; soak them in molten paraffin wax, which penetrates all tiny pores. This ensures smooth writing without scratching paper and reduces lead breakage.


II. Step 2: Processing Wooden Pencil Barrels (Softwoods: basswood, poplar are commonly used)

1. Principle of Grooving & Sandwich Lead Embedding

Log Slicing

Raw logs are cut into thin planks of uniform thickness; each plank equals half the thickness of a pencil. The lumber must be free of large wood knots for smooth sharpening with pencil sharpeners.


2. Mechanical Grooving

A groover cuts a row of semicircular grooves on each plank, with groove diameters perfectly matching pencil leads.


3. "Sandwich" Assembly with Embedded Leads

Apply special woodworking adhesive inside the grooves of one grooved plank;

Machines automatically place individual pencil leads precisely into the grooves;

Cover with a second identical grooved plank and clamp tightly, fully sandwiching the pencil lead between the two wood planks.


4. Low-Temperature Curing & Adhesive Drying

Bake in a 40°C drying room for 8~12 hours until the adhesive fully cures, locking leads firmly inside the wood without shifting or breaking.


III. Step 3: Shaping & Cutting into Individual Pencils

1. Profiling & Cutting

The bonded large wood panel is fed into a shaping machine. Cutters simultaneously carve hexagonal, round or triangular pencil barrels, while cutting the large panel into separate individual pencils.

Hexagonal barrels are the most common, preventing pencils from rolling off desks; triangular barrels are designed for easy grip by young children.


2. High-Temperature Singeing & Sanding Polishing

Singe wood burrs away at 260°C, then sand and polish to create smooth, burr-free surfaces.


IV. Step 4: Painting, Hot Stamping & Eraser Fitting

1. Multi-Layer Painting

A single pencil receives 10~12 repeated paint coats: 5 primer coats to fill wood grain, 5 topcoat color layers, plus 2 glossy clear varnish coats. After drying, the surface feels bright, sleek and smooth.

2. Hot Stamping of Logos & Text

A high-temperature gold foil stamping machine prints brand names, HB/2B grades, origin and other text – the lettering visible on finished pencil barrels.

3. Optional Eraser Assembly

Fit an aluminum metal ferrule over one end of the pencil, then press a pink eraser into the ferrule, secured by metal crimp fasteners.


V. Final Stage: Quality Inspection & Packaging for Factory Shipment

Random sampling inspection includes sharpening tests, anti-breakage strength tests, and writing blackness compliance checks. Qualified pencils are boxed for retail sale.

Key Differences for Colored Pencils

Colored pencil leads contain no graphite; instead, mineral / synthetic pigments plus binders are used. Oil-based colored pencils add wax, while water-soluble colored pencils use water-soluble binders. The subsequent firing and wooden barrel assembly processes are identical to standard graphite pencils.
